The business practices utilized by Creative Contracting to earn the "Remodeler of the Year, 2004" award can apply to any business. The introduction to the article is called A Whole Greater Than the Sum which is an excellent way to describe what happens when all the aspects of a business are aligned. One of the many things that Creative Contracting does which can apply to any business is to utilize outside consultants to provide insight, perform special projects such as survey customers to better focus their marketing efforts and to help implement, train and document operational systems. This has both streamlined operations and allowed them to grow revenue while increasing gross margin but also has allowed them to focus on hiring people with raw talent and the right personality to fit into the team. Often in the hiring process because companies don't have the right documentation of their processes or training in place they end up having to make a compromise on personality, fit and potential in order to get the skills and experience to fill an immediate need. This solves a short-term problem but does not do anything to help long-term growth and team dynamics. Skills are much easier to adapt than personalities. Favorite Book 2007
The Toyota Way is my favorite book for 2007. It had so many good ideas that I could not keep up and ended up reading it again and even buying the Field Book to go along with it.
Download Elegant Solutions from Change This which provides some highlights of the Toyota Production System. Too many ideas that are applicable to contractors to even count!
