Campaign For Your Company

This article highlights the success of Landmark Construction's use of custom printed campaign signs supporting various political agendas that include the company logo for brand recognition. When I first read this it immediately invoked the "Aha" moment. This is a great idea and is a lot cheaper than most other forms of brand building. If you support particular candidates and/or propositions that affect local businesses in positive way you could also follow-up with a letter to those businesses letting them know what your are doing to support a cause that affects their business.
Chances are pretty good that their existing contractor isn't going to such lengths to help them out. In your letter or phone call ask them if there is anywhere else that you may be able to place your signs related to the campaign. At worst you will have added another contact to your rolodex and at best you will be asked to bid on or do a job which gets you in the door. More information can be found regarding using similar networking tactics in the book Networking With Millionaires which I would highly recommend reading or listening to. Most of the book is geared towards professional services but enough ideas are applicable to contractors that I would definitely recommend it.
The Need For Proper Labeling

More discussion coming soon based on experience and sparked by an article I saw in the latest issues of Electrical Contracting Products called "A Case for Labeling: The critical - but often neglected - element of network cabling"

Favorite Book 2007
The Toyota Way is my favorite book for 2007. It had so many good ideas that I could not keep up and ended up reading it again and even buying the Field Book to go along with it.
Download Elegant Solutions from Change This which provides some highlights of the Toyota Production System. Too many ideas that are applicable to contractors to even count!
